The Backstory of Mountain Honey

Mountain Honey is a celebration of the woman who stands alongside her man. I have been blessed with my own example (and the inspiration for this song…), but time and time again I have known the most incredible families of our service members and this song celebrates them as well.

In a world that downplays the importance of a woman’s potential as mother, lover, partner and anchor of the home and family, this song stands against that notion and for the irreplaceable and beautiful reality of what she can be. It speaks to the incredible impact that she has on her family and the world around her, and acknowledges the struggle that she endures in the process. There could never be a more important role to play, and it is a calling and a path that leaves the deepest of tracks in this world.

This song swam in my head for many years without finding its way to pen and paper. My deployments were often a year or more long, and during that time my wife, like so many other military wives, had to perform as a single parent, a single home owner, someone who shouldered all the responsibility without a partner by their side. That partner was in a combat zone on the other side of the world. It’s a landslide of emotion, responsibility, frustration, fear, love and faith that, from the outside looking in seems undoable. But she did it. Our military spouses carry a weight that no one can understand until they wear those shoes. And their sacrifice is silent, the pain most often allowed to surface when they are alone in the night, the kids comforted and asleep, the house and schedule re-set for another day.

That strength is magic to me. I hope this song in some way does it justice.
